Achtung Panzer Kharkov 1943

The Eastern Front was an incredibly bloody area for German troops during World War II, with ground frequently won and lost by German and Russian forces. Now, a critical battlefield of that conflicted area is being digitally recreated thanks to Graviteam's Achtung Panzer: Kharkov 1943. At the Paradox Interactive Convention in Sweden, I got the first look at the upcoming wargame.
Dedicated to the last German victory on the Eastern front, Kharkov 1943 will allow players to take on either the role of Germans in March 1943 or the Red Army in February 1943. Graviteam has taken care to recreate the entire region surrounding Kharkov in detail for the game, using military documents and historical records to present the area as it would have looked during the war. Many of these documents serve as the 2D maps that players will use to deploy their troops across the battlefield, strategically setting up artillery support and reinforcements to troop positions.
Once their plans have been fully laid out, players can immediately launch into a real time 3D battle and enact their strategy, holding key positions or destroying vital bridges to prevent enemy advancements. Thanks to a fully destructible environment, players can exploit devastated areas to buy time for reinforcements to support their positions. Players can also use the variable weather conditions, such as fog, to hide troop advancements, or time attacks with the day and night cycle to launch surprise attacks on enemy positions. According to the developers, night time fighting reduces vision and accuracy for all troops, while surprise attacks could shake enemy morale, making them less effective in responding to strikes.
However, these tactics won't always work for every battle; thanks to the game's advanced AI, your computerized opponent will analyze your movements and the tactics you use in battle and formulate new strategies based on your actions. This non-scripted response to your methods will ensure replayability from game to game, which should keep players returning to the battlefields frequently. Tank commanders interested in enlisting won't have long to wait, as Kharkov 1943 is scheduled to invade store shelves in Q1 2010.
